Vacation Rentals by Owner, or VRBO, is a term in the travel business that refers to a property owner renting out a furnished property on a temporary basis as a substitute for a hotel or resort. They are often called to as villa rentals in Europe, and are more common there than in the United States. More established areas in the United States include major tourist areas such as Hawaii, California, and Florida.
Difference between Vacation Rentals by Owner and TimeshareWhile vacation rentals by owner may seem similar to timeshares, they are actually quite different. A VRBO is generally owned by one individual, where a timeshare is has multiple owners who each share a piece of the financial responsibility of ownership. As payback they receive a time period each year where they have singular use of the property. Large groups of timeshares are owned by so-called timeshare resorts who facilitate trades between units and resorts that the company controls.

Room service, caretakers, front desk personnel, and experienced staff are certainly an upside to resort rental life, and these are all things that you may not necessarily have in a VRBO. Dealing with property owners may be an issue as well if there's a language difference or they're tricky to get a hold of.

This type of agreement will fill in many of the gaps between a VRBO and a hotel, with 24 hour check-in, problem solving, maintenance, and even daily maid service in some cases.
Vacation Rental by Owner Management CompaniesAs mentioned above, property owners will sometimes contract with a vacation rental management company to market the vacation rental property. They also take reservations, handle billing, maintenance, and any other issues that may come up. Look for a company that's a member of the Vacation Rental Managers Association.
